Data governance beyond the GDC: Where do we go from here?
Data is a critical resource for scientific discovery, policy-making, and technologies such as artificial intelligence. Yet, we face significant challenges in harnessing data responsibly for the global good. A new sense of urgency is required to ensure we do not miss or lock away the benefits of the data century that can facilitate global scientific collaborations and attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals. The purpose of the session is to host an exchange on what is next for data governance beyond the Global Digital Compact. Participants will discuss what the GDC points to and what breakthroughs for data governance can be anticipated beyond that. Speakers will share ideas for opportunities such as an International Decade on Data for People and Planet and a Data-20. The session aims to identify how a mission-driven process and vision for international data cooperation could simulate international investment, bridge capacity gaps, leverage specialist expertise in the private sector, and reduce barriers to data sharing.
