Sustainable governance of blue carbon
In recent years, the potential of “blue carbon” of seagrasses and seaweeds in the ocean has become increasingly recognized as a sustainable means of capturing carbon and nutrients for climate change mitigation. This session will discuss frameworks and governance mechanisms to sustain long-term seagrass/seaweed cultivation. We will bring together representatives from the public sector (local and national government), the private sector, civil society, and researchers from various regions and developing island economies, with the aim to come up with a set of recommendations to expedite the implementation of sustainable blue carbon initiatives across UN member states.
