Beyond Digital Literacy: AI Fluency as a Core Competence

This session reframes the AI and skills debate from job displacement toward the capabilities people need to critically engage with AI already shaping workplaces, public services and democratic life. It proposes AI fluency as a fourth foundational competence, alongside literacy, numeracy and digital skills: the ability to assess AI reliability, identify errors and bias, exercise human judgment, and participate meaningfully in decisions about AI use. Building on the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance and AI for Good Global Summit, the session brings together BPW International, the MCAA Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, and UNESCO science policy expertise. It will produce an initial definition of AI fluency and recommendations for equitable measurement, capacity-building and financing.
