Advancing Maternal Safety during Childbirth: Improving Recognition, Response and Care

We are pleased to host a high-level panel event on the margins of the Eighty-First United Nations General Assembly, convening participants in-person and virtually.

Maternal mortality remains a critical global health challenge, with complications during pregnancy and childbirth claiming hundreds of thousands of lives annually, and the global maternal mortality ratio in 2023 remaining nearly three times above the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal target 3.1 for 2030. Despite progress in maternal health, poor outcomes continue to be driven by gaps in access, quality, and timely intervention. Women face delays in accessing cesarean section, outdated standard of care, and delays in recognizing and responding to clinical deterioration. Strengthening maternal safety requires a comprehensive approach that will be discussed in this session – one that improves access to care, upgrades antiquated standards of monitoring, and enables earlier detection through AI-enabled innovations leading to timely treatment and improved outcomes.

This panel will convene government officials, multilateral representatives, development banks and financing organizations, academic institutions and medical professionals, and private sector partners to drive coordinated advocacy, elevate the importance of maternal patient monitoring and timely intervention, and catalyze systemic change across healthy systems. Lunch will be served.
