Enrolment and retention of girls in Basic Education in Nigeria: The situation analysis
There have been introductions of different policies and programs both local and international in the past to bring about an increase in enrolment and retention of girls in basic education in Nigeria. In spite of these efforts, there still remains significant gaps in enrollment and retention of girls compared to boys in schools in the country as attendance rates for girls are still low. The panel examines how various infrastructural, psychological, social, economic and other factors militate against all efforts to enhance enrolment of girls in basic Education. it also examines how past and existing policies and programs in Basic Education effectively address disparity in enrolment of pupils, it ascertains the proportion of girls’ enrolment in Basic Education in the focal areas and discusses how the push and pull factors for dropping out of schools among the girls can be further addressed effectively.
