Exciting Updates in the Movement to End FGM/C in the U.S.
It is estimated that approximately 513,000 women and girls in the U.S. are at risk or have undergone female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). As the main source for information and the lead advocacy voice in the U.S.; ending this practice is crucial for The U.S. End FGM/C Network to achieve its mission. There Is No Limit Foundation and Sahiyo, two of the Network’s members working in the U.S., have been tirelessly advocating against this human right violation since their inception.
Earlier this year, The Network hosted two listening sessions so that U.S. members had the opportunity to share their experiences with both Federal and State laws; how the laws are impacting their advocacy work, what is needed in creating the ideal anti-FGM law and specific intersections with anti-FGM laws. The decision was made to host these conversations because the Network wanted to gather the necessary information in order to advocate for efficient anti-FGM laws throughout the country. And as a result, a report was created to ensure the information reaches the broader population.
This event will center around updates from these organizations working to uphold human rights, sharing key findings from the report and recommended steps needed to take to protect women and girls in the U.S. from FGM/C.
