Climate change poses a great threat to international peace and security. In his statement to the Security Council in February 2021, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the impact of the climate crisis being worse in countries already experiencing fragility and conflict. For example in South Sudan, the humanitarian crisis has been fueled by severe flooding, localized drought and continued conflict. This continues to push communities deeper into poverty, leaving them vulnerable to conflict.

Creating spaces for learning, experience sharing and collaboration for young people working on climate change, peace and security is important to strengthen advocacy on sustainable peace. Convened during 2022’s UN General Assembly High Level Week, NYC Climate Week, and in observance of the United Nations’ International Day of Peace, this side event brings together representatives from civil society, government, youth peacebuilders, climate activists to explore the opportunities to advance the Climate Security Nexus with the aim of building sustainable peace.

RSVP to attend in person (in addition to Registering to attend online). https://tzuchicenter.org/events/explorations-of-the-climate-security-nexus
