Clean energy transitions required to meet global climate commitments pose a variety of challenges for coal communities around the world. Just transitions are vital to ensure no one is left behind during these processes. The European Commission’s Coal Regions in Transition (CRIT) initiative aims to assist EU countries and coal regions in addressing the challenges related to the transition to a low-carbon economy. Launched in 2017, the CRIT initiative has been successful in connecting stakeholders and increasing the dialogue of Just Transitions in these regions, as well as providing a source of good practice and technical assistance.
The purpose of this event is to showcase the progress of this initiative alongside that of other regions around the world, in order to enable, connect and inspire coal communities worldwide.
This webinar will feature a series of talks from members of the CRIT Secretarait as well as external speakers, followed by a Q&A session and will cover the following topics:
• Introduction to the Coal Regions in Transition initiative
• Achievements and lessons from an EU region: Asturias, Spain
• US regional perspectives on Just Transitions in coal
• Financing a Just Transition
