Making the Case for Handwashing
The simple act of handwashing has the potential to reduce illness and infections, avert preventable deaths, improve healthcare outcomes, and bolster progress in education, equity, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While handwashing access is measured as part of SDG Target 6.2, the impact of good handwashing behavior cuts across the SDG agenda.
The Handwashing Handbook will be launched on Thursday, September 24, 2020 as the first event in the Handwashing Thursday Series. The handbook aims to equip handwashing champions in government, civil society, private sector, academia, and nongovernmental organizations with resources for strengthening local systems to support handwashing and tools for planning and implementing success programs to change handwashing behavior. To achieve the SDGs and other health targets, handwashing champions must make the case to governments, businesses, donors, and other stakeholders to prioritize handwashing in all contexts.
A clear explanation of handwashing benefits and the case for investment will be presented in the Making the Case for Handwashing event.
