DRIVING MULTIDIMENSIONAL POVERTY REDUCTION TO SECURE WELL-BEING FOR ALL

High-Level Side Event to the 77th UN General Assembly

2-4 pm; Friday 23rd September 2022, at Millennium Hilton New York One UN Plaza, NY 10017, New York

On behalf of the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN) and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we are deeply honored to invite you attend in person this special side event at this year’s UN General Assembly in New York. This high-level event will address the use of Multidimensional Poverty Indices (MPIs) as a policy tool to eradicate poverty in all its dimensions and secure well-being for all. It will take place on Friday 23rd September 2022, between 2-4 pm, at Millennium Hilton New York One UN Plaza, UN Plaza, New York

As the world confronts a number of crises—environmental, economic, political, and medical—there is a need for countries to reaffirm the commitment of the Sustainable Development Goals to eradicating poverty in all its dimensions and securing well-being for all. Achieving these goals will require a renewed focus on the overlapping deprivations experienced by the poorest members of society and a willingness to explore innovative and multisectoral policies for reducing them. The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is a tool that can highlight these issues and help inform their solutions.

This high-level side event will be hosted by the President of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, with the participation of heads of state and international organizations. It will bring together global leaders to share their commitments to using MPIs to drive poverty reduction, inform policy actions, and promote well-being.

The discussion that will be generated in this side event aims to galvanize action and foster collaboration among institutions and sectors to design sustainable solutions having a greater impact on people living in poverty and promoting well-being across society.

The event is organized on behalf of the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN), a network of senior policymakers from more than 60 countries and 19 international organizations focused on measuring and reducing multidimensional poverty. The Secretariat is hosted by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI)at the University of Oxford.
