Preparing for impactful action on AMR: Looking towards the 2024 UNGA High-level Meeting on AMR.

In an era marked by remarkable medical advancements and improved healthcare, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasing menace that threatens to undermine our ability to prevent and treat infections and diseases effectively. Over decades, the misuse and overuse of antibiotics have accelerated the emergence of resistant microorganisms with the consequence of necessary treatments becoming increasingly ineffective. Furthermore, even routine medical procedures that once relied on antibiotic prophylaxis have now become fraught with heightened risk. This challenge jeopardizes not only healthcare systems but also the very foundation of modern medicine. The implications of AMR are far-reaching, encompassing increased mortality rates, extended illness durations and higher healthcare costs.

The UNGA High-level Meeting on AMR is one year away. The threat from AMR is at an all-time high, so the need for impactful multilateral commitment is, too. This session will explore directions for the road ahead. By bringing together voices with different perspectives on the same matter, the session will highlight the different actions that can be part of the solution providing views on what innovative and global commitments are needed to address the escalating threat of AMR.

The format will be by registration only and will bring together ministers, high-level government officials and senior representatives from key stakeholders engaged in the field of AMR.
