Globally, the health care sector contributes to approximately 5 percent of greenhouse gas emissions while delivering care and procuring products, services, and technologies from a carbon-intensive supply chain. The largest share of emissions come from ‘Scope 3’, which primarily derive from the complex global supply chain for medical devices, equipment, pharmaceuticals, and other products needed within the healthcare sector.

Addressing Scope 3 emissions within the healthcare sector can reveal opportunities to optimize production, distribution, and disposal, fostering the development of sustainable health care practices, technologies, and solutions. A focus on Scope 3 emissions does not only allow the healthcare sector to measure and mitigate their broader environmental impact, but it also enhances stakeholder engagement, and contributes to global sustainability efforts to combat climate change and achieve sustainable development. Ensuring that hospitals are sustainable is not only essential for the environment but also for the health and well-being of our patients, staff, and the wider community – now and in the future.

Recognizing that Scope 3 emissions are significant in the healthcare sector due to the sector´s unique characteristics but also its potential to influence environmental and social outcomes, this session will explore the transition to “a green healthcare sector” with a focus on supply chain emissions — what we know, where we are, and what we are currently doing to reduce both excessive consumption of medical supplies and care, and to reduce the emissions embodied in the materials we use to deliver high-quality care deliver. Embracing sustainability or “going green”, is no longer just a concept to understand but also an ethos to embody and actualize. Climate change is the biggest threat to health in the 21st century. Healthcare should be part of the solution, not the problem.

This session will bring together thought leaders, innovators, and stakeholders from various regions to collectively address the urgency of sustainability in healthcare. Through knowledge sharing, collaboration, and a commitment to responsible practices, this event seeks to catalyze positive change and chart a course towards a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive healthcare sector.
