This will be an insightful panel discussion with the objective to frame the importance of post-doctoral capacity training in Africa to advance innovative research to tackle common infectious and non-communicable diseases and emerging global pandemics. With climate change adding to the threat to lives and livelihoods, strengthening health research and innovation in Africa and beyond is more important than ever.
Moreover, a further objective of this session will be to emphasise how increasing investments in African post-doctoral training also supports the attainment of key SDG’s, such as the following: SDG3 ‘Good Health and Wellbeing’, SDG4 ‘Quality Education’, SDG8 ‘Decent work and economic growth’, SDG9 ‘Foster Innovation’, SDG10 ‘Reduce Inequality’, SDG13‘Climate Action and SDG17 ‘Partnerships for the Goals’.
Through a discussion of the best practices from different countries across the continent and their plans of action to bring post-doctoral training and education to the agenda, this panel discussion will also explore the historical context, progress, and challenges in African higher education. The focus will also be on discussing decolonisation, research methodologies, and geopolitical influences. AREF will chair the panel discussion and will also invite high calibre panellists to take part in the session.
