Achieving SDG3: Advancing Maternal and Child Health in Emerging Economies
BCIU and GE HealthCare Foundation are pleased to host a multi-stakeholder roundtable discussion on the margins of the 79th UN General Assembly focusing on the pivotal role of collaboration, resource mobilization, and access to life-saving technology, to drive actionable solutions for emerging economies to meet key SDG3 goals by 2030, including reducing global maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
Maternal mortality is a public health problem that disproportionately affects LMICs. Almost 95% of all maternal deaths occurred in LMICs in 20203. Based on these current trends, over 60 countries are unlikely to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets for reducing maternal, newborn, and stillborn mortality by 2030. Maternal and child health outcomes in LMICs and emerging economies represent a significant challenge as mortality rates in these regions far exceed those in high-income nations, with particularly high rates observed among vulnerable populations. This vast disparity underscores systemic deficiencies in healthcare infrastructure, accessibility, data collection, technology, and socio-economic factors. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive approach that considers systemic, geographical, and economic factors.
This program will emphasize the need to leverage diverse expertise and resources, develop strategies to improve maternal and child health outcomes, to ensure equitable access to healthcare for mothers regardless of their geographical or socio-economic status.
