Advancing Women’s Empowerment Through Research: The Africa POWER Consortium

In September 2025, world leaders will gather in New York City for the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The gathering comes at a critical moment for addressing barriers to women’s empowerment, equality and well-being. As UNGA 80 President Annalena Baerbock stated in a recent address regarding her presidency, “As only the fifth woman in this position within 80 years, I’m aware that peace and development can only be sustained when half of the population—which is in every country, women—have an equal seat at the table.”

Aligning with Baerbock’s call to action, the Africa POWER Consortium—a collaboration of five leading policy research institutions—will host a discussion on developing a unified vision and amplifying initiatives focused on women’s empowerment. Consortium partners and experts will present emerging issues and evidence, share lessons and experiences, and hold discussions on integrating research into policy and service delivery frameworks that promote gender equity. The Africa POWER Consortium will also present and launch its strategy, explaining its purpose and how it responds to policymakers’ and partners’ questions through demand-driven research.

On September 26th from 3:30-5pm EDT, join the Africa POWER Consortium for a UNGA 80 side event featuring engaging dialogue and knowledge-sharing on the role of research collaboratives in working with stakeholders to improve women’s empowerment policies and outcomes. Catered reception to follow.
