Africa’s Scientific Leadership: A Catalyst for Global Progress

Africa is redefining its place in the global scientific landscape. From genomic breakthroughs and climate-smart agriculture to AI-enabled health systems and pandemic surveillance, African scientists are not only responding to local development challenges they are also shaping global innovation agendas. This high-level side event, convened by the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA Foundation), will spotlight Africa’s scientific leadership as a driver of sustainable development and a cornerstone of global resilience.

The session will advance five key objectives:

  1. Elevating Africa’s Global Scientific Identity: Affirming Africa as a co-author of global science agendas and promoting regulatory equity by integrating African leadership into international decision-making forums.
  2. Embedding Science in Development and Policy: Encouraging governments to institutionalise evidence-informed policymaking through mechanisms like science attachés and advisory panels, thus aligning with SDG 16.
  3. Advancing Gender Equity and Talent Development: Highlighting scalable models that support women and early-career researchers, contributing to SDGs 4 and 5.
  4. Rethinking Science Financing: Promoting sovereign, sustainable, and blended funding models to reduce reliance on volatile donor aid. The session calls for innovation bonds, pooled funds, and capital market instruments to anchor African-led research systems.
  5. Strengthening Science Diplomacy: Advocating for African influence in global standards, especially in ethics, AI governance, and open science, thus reinforcing Africa’s geopolitical autonomy.
