CLIMATE TIPPING POINTS AND THE ARCTIC: Global Urgency for Policy

UArctic, the Consulate General of Finland and Dartmouth College are organizing an insightful afternoon of discussion around Arctic leadership, perspective, and solutions to the threat of climate change. We will hear from a diverse set of panelists and keynote speakers, emphasizing the need for collaboration between policymakers, indigenous people, the finance sector, and other stakeholders. Speakers will include experts such as Lars Kullerud, President of UArctic, as well as, Barbara Will, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Dartmouth.

The event will take place on September 23 at the Cornell Club of New York (6 East 44th Street) from 1:30 PM to 7 PM, including a networking reception.

The Arctic perspective on climate change offers both a stark reminder of the urgency of the crisis and a myriad of potential solutions. The region’s direct experience with climate change underscores the need for robust political action, despite the challenges of developing policies in an area historically devoid of political frameworks.

Although research on climate change is extensive, translating this knowledge into governmental action remains a significant hurdle. We are already past several tipping points, with the Paris Agreement’s goals increasingly out of reach. The need for global action is paramount, and cold regions must lead the way.

Developing effective policies in the absence of precedents is crucial, and devising a strategic “Plan B” is essential as we navigate this crisis. Understanding the lived experiences of those in the Arctic, where the effects of climate change are most pronounced, can provide valuable insights and urgency – just as New York City and other regions are feeling the impacts.
