Creative Aging: From Inspiration to Implementation
This program situates New York City within a growing global movement that recognizes arts participation as a vital resource for health, wellbeing, and social inclusion in later life.
We will begin with a screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary VIVA VERDI!, directed by Yvonne Russo and produced by Christine La Monte. The film is an intimate glimpse into the lives of the celebrated opera singers and musicians currently living out their “third act” while mentoring international music students who live among them at Milan’s unique retirement home, Casa Verdi, built by Giuseppe Verdi in 1896.
This is an inspiring portrait of legendary artists flourishing in later years through music, mentorship, and community. A panel featuring leaders in aging, accessibility, healthcare, and the arts will then examine how creative engagement is being integrated into local communities and public health initiatives around the world to promote health, connection, lifelong learning, and age-friendly societies.
The day concludes with optional hands-on workshops to support organizations in developing their arts and culture strategy for an aging population, approaches to strengthening arts-based facilitation, as well as direct experiences with movement and music, offering participants the opportunity to engage in creative practices that foster vitality, purpose, and belonging.
