From Roadmap to Reality: Accelerating STI Implementation through the UN TFM
The UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM) has provided a vital blueprint for aligning science, technology, and innovation (STI) with the Sustainable Development Goals. This session focuses on translating Africa’s STI roadmaps—developed under the TFM—into coordinated, actionable strategies. By showcasing country experiences, institutional models, and regional collaboration efforts, the session will explore how Africa can accelerate implementation, attract investment, and build resilient STI ecosystems that deliver impact at scale.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) cannot be achieved without the full and strategic deployment of science, technology, and innovation. Recognising this, the United Nations established the Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM) to support countries in leveraging STI as a central driver of development. Through this mechanism, several African countries have developed national and regional STI for SDG roadmaps that reflect local priorities while aligning with global commitments.
However, the transition from roadmap to implementation remains a significant challenge. Many African countries continue to face constraints in financing, policy coordination, institutional capacity, and technical infrastructure. Without dedicated action and sustained investment, these roadmaps risk remaining aspirational documents rather than engines of transformation.
This session will focus on the next phase of Africa’s STI journey: operationalising and scaling the roadmaps developed through the TFM process. It will explore how African governments, regional institutions, and international partners can work together to:
- Embed STI roadmaps into national development planning and budgeting processes
- Strengthen governance and coordination mechanisms for multisectoral STI implementation
- Mobilise domestic and blended financing for research, innovation, and infrastructure
- Foster regional collaboration through shared technology platforms and knowledge hubs
- Engage the private sector, youth, and local innovators in implementation efforts
