Funding LMIC Energy Transitions

There is broad consensus that 1) significantly more finance is needed to drive effective energy transitions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), 2) the private sector possesses the only pools of capital large enough to meet this need, 3) private sector investment into LMICs fall far beneath that in developed countries in both percentage and volume, and 4) that public and concessional capital must crowd in the private sector to achieve necessary impact. This consensus exists alongside a recognition that LMIC energy transitions are paramount for human development, economic growth, and global climate outcomes. Still, progress in addressing these needs is slow, and barriers are pervasive. This conversation will address this status quo, the nature of barriers major capital providers face for LMIC investments, and potential pathways forward.
