Harnessing Digital Health for Maternal & Newborn Survival: PReSTrack’s Role in Real-Time Care in Sierra Leone

Over the past two decades, Sierra Leone has achieved one of the most significant declines in maternal mortality in the world, reducing maternal deaths by nearly 70%. This progress reflects determined political leadership, the dedication of health workers, and strong partnerships. Yet the journey is far from over, as the country continues to prioritize safe motherhood and newborn survival as national imperatives.

At this UNGA 80 side event, the Ministry of Health of Sierra Leone will showcase PReSTrack, a pioneering pregnancy tracking platform designed to ensure that no pregnancy is invisible. PReSTrack provides real-time data that connects women to timely care, empowers health workers to act on risks as they emerge, and strengthens accountability across the health system. By embedding digital tools into frontline services, Sierra Leone is building a health system where information drives action and lives are saved.

This innovation is part of a broader reform vision anchored in Sierra Leone’s Life Stages Approach, a people-centered model that organizes care across every phase of life, from birth through adulthood. By integrating tools like PReSTrack within this continuum, maternal and newborn health is strengthened not as a stand-alone program but as part of a system that anticipates needs, follows individuals across their life course, and ensures continuity of care.

The event will convene leaders from government, development partners, funding organizations, and digital innovators across Africa and beyond. Discussions will explore how technology-enabled solutions can be scaled sustainably, the financing models that make them viable, and how digital health can accelerate progress toward universal health coverage.

Participants will gain insights into Sierra Leone’s reform journey and learn from peers across the continent who are reimagining how digital innovation can power health system transformation. The dialogue will spotlight not only the promise of digital health but also the leadership, partnerships, and accountability needed to translate innovation into healthier futures for women, children, and communities.
