How can Universal Basic Income aid a Just Transition?

As part of NYC Climate Week 2024, Equal Right invites you to join us for an evening of discussion on the role Universal Basic Income (UBI) can play in aiding a Just Transition.

2024 is a critical year for climate finance, as Parties look to agree a New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. But far less is being said about how this money should be spent. Yes, we know mitigation, adaptation and possibly loss and damage will be high on the priority list, but what does this mean in practice?

This event contends that a universal cash payment, or UBI, must be central to any vision for a just transition and climate justice.

It will feature contributions from leading experts on basic income, cash transfers, climate finance and reparations, and aims to provoke a conversation around the relationship between UBI and climate justice, considering questions such as:

• Can UBI represent a form of reparations for climate debt?
• How can we fund a global basic income while mitigating the climate crisis?
• What role can UBI play as a form of compensation for loss, damage & climate disaster?
• How can a UBI support adaptation initiatives?
• Can UBI address economic inequality between the Global North and Global South?
