Indigenous Frontlines: Rising for Climate Justice
Learn about Climate Justice from the Indigenous Voice. Join us for an evening of empowerment, blending powerful speakers, vibrant music, silent art auction and captivating art demonstrations to highlight urgent environmental issues and the disproportionate impacts facing frontline communities.
This impactful gathering serves as both an awareness-raising platform and a crucial fundraiser to support featured Indigenous communities battling destructive extractivism projects, and the protection of sacred lands, cultural heritage, and sustainable ways of life.
Featured Causes:
1. The Mapuche community of Archipelago Chiloé, Chile: Led by Lonko Clementina Lepio (Keynote Speaker), this community is fighting to preserve their ancestral lands, culture, and way of life from large-scale wind turbine projects. These projects threaten to pillage the island’s vital wetland ecosystems, agricultural resources, and sacred cultural sites.
2. Prayer Horse organization, USA: This Indigenous-led organization brings awareness to the devastating impacts of lithium and copper mining on tribal lands and communities across Nevada and surrounding states. Josh Dini (Keynote Speaker) and other organizers work to protect water resources and preserve traditional ways of life.
3. Shirley Krenak Institute, Brazil: Led by indigenous filmmaker Shirley Krenak (Keynote Speaker), this institute raises awareness about the struggles faced by the Krenak people due to mining activities in Minas Gerais, Brazil. They focus on environmental protection, education, and preserving cultural heritage. Additional featured speakers and artists include: Leonardo Cerda – A Kichwa leader and activist from the community of Serena in the Napo Province of Ecuador. Leonardo is the founder of the Movement for the Liberation of Indigenous and Afrodescendant Peoples (BILM). Lyla June – An Indigenous musician, scholar, and community organizer of Diné (Navajo), Tsétsêhéstâhese (Cheyenne) and European lineages. Supaman (ft. DJ Element) – A Native American dancer and innovative hip hop artist who has dedicated his life to empowering and spreading a message of hope, pride and resilience through his original art form.
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT: The planet as we know it is under immense stress due to exploitation of natural resources for human consumption. As many governments and industries are moving towards “green solutions” to combat this issue, it is still the native people who are at the frontlines, suffering at its expense. The Indigenous voice cannot be forgotten in the conversation about the future of our planet. To learn more about this event visit www.weavingworlds.org
