Navigating Weather and Climate Data with Earthmover

Data about the physical climate system–the atmosphere, ocean, and land–are fundamental for climate adaptation and mitigation. Weather and climate data originate from sensors, satellites, and numerical simulations, which also give us a view into the possible futures that are in store both short-term (weather forecasts) and long-term (multi-decadal climate projections under different emissions scenarios). The sheer volume (petabytes of data per year) and complexity (obscure file formats and data portals) of this data can make it intimidating for data scientists to know where to start, which is holding back efforts to leverage data to enhance climate resilience across multiple sectors.

Come join our expert team of climate scientists, software developers, and data engineers for a crash course in the current state-of-the-art technology for weather and climate data. You’ll learn about how to find and access free and open data, how to use open-source software to process, analyze, and visualize climate data, and best practices for building production-grade applications with this data.

This event is aimed at folks with some background in data science or software development but will also be accessible to a general audience.
