Re-Energize Governance of Disasters Risk Reduction and Resilience

Given escalating natural disasters, intensified by climate change, and increased human activity, science and innovation are pivotal in enhancing disaster governance. Re-Energize Disasters Risk Reduction and Resilience for sustainability session fosters global collaboration to address governance gaps, focusing on coastal resilience for vulnerable communities and nations.

The session addresses the escalating challenges posed by the heightened frequency and intensity of floods and coastal disasters, intensified by climate variability and evolving human activity patterns. With weather-related hazards tripling and an anticipated rise in affected populations to 325 million by 2030, Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience (DR3) has emerged as a critical global concern, integrated into frameworks such as the Sendai Framework, Sustainable Development Goals, and UN Climate negotiations. A panel comprising speakers from different countries and background aims to foster a collective understanding of governance gaps and opportunities for innovative solutions to enhance resilience and reduce vulnerability and risks faced by nations, geographies, and vulnerable groups in islands and coastal areas in the Global South. Discussions will center around methods co-developed with communities and practitioners engaged in disaster risk reduction and resilience efforts, strategies required to achieve coastal resilience by 2030, Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience (DR3) has emerged as a critical global concern, integrated into frameworks such as the Sendai Framework, Sustainable Development Goals, and UN Climate negotiations, as well as presenting innovative solutions to enhance resilience and adaptation to climate change, emphasizing the need for collaboration, inclusivitiy and fairness.
