Reimagining the Built Environment for a Net Zero Future

In the United States, residential and commercial buildings account for almost 40% of the country’s energy usage. This equates to 35% of total carbon emissions and a staggering 74% of electricity consumption. Within a building, heating and cooling systems alone contribute to 40% of its energy footprint, highlighting the need for efficient and sustainable building practices.

The increasing pressure to meet decarbonization deadlines drives a demand for low-carbon spaces. However, energy and demand response is falling short in major global markets. This has prompted utilities, corporations, and policymakers to seek innovative solutions to address growing energy and low-carbon building needs. Novel approaches to the built environment and energy consumption offer significant opportunities.

While AI has the ability to hasten the drive toward net zero through innovative climate and energy solutions, its very use is placing additional demand on the grid. This Financial Times briefing, held during Climate Week NYC and in partnership with Carrier and JLL, will explore the opportunities and challenges presented by AI. It will also cover the solutions and approaches that building owners, occupiers, solution providers, and policymakers need to adopt to build a more resilient and sustainable infrastructure in the face of rising demand and climate change.
