Space Education in AFRICA: Bridging Gaps and Fostering Global Collaboration

This session at UNGA79, titled “Space Education in Africa,” brings together an esteemed panel of educators and leaders in space science. Participants include teachers from African public and private schools, the Chief Scientific Officer of Nigeria’s National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), the Founder and National Coordinator of Astronomers Without Borders (AWB) Nigeria, a Fellow of the TechWomen program under the U.S. Department of State, and a teaching faculty member from UNITAR’s Global Diplomacy Fellowship Program in New York—a US NASA GLOBE Partner, NASA GLOBE UN and SDGs consultant, member of NASA GLOBE GIO TEPE team and a member of the GLOBE International STEM Professionals Network, and the CEO of the Global STEM Education Center, Inc and the ED of the Limitless Space Nonprofit in the US. The session will provide a comprehensive overview of the current landscape of space education in Africa, showcasing best practices and innovative programs that have successfully engaged students and communities. Additionally, it will identify opportunities for international collaboration, resource sharing, and capacity building to overcome existing challenges and foster a more inclusive and impactful space education ecosystem across the continent. This session’s importance extends beyond Africa, offering valuable insights and strategies for educators, scientists, and innovators globally. By linking space science with global issues and promoting partnerships, it aims to inspire and equip the next generation of scientists and innovators worldwide. The session will also emphasize the critical role of environmental science diplomacy and its alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goal #17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Highlighting how educational initiatives can bridge gaps between nations, foster international cooperation, and address global challenges, this session underscores the shared commitment to scientific advancement, environmental stewardship, and global collaboration.
