The Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI): Enabling Science and Partnerships in Support of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

Since 2016, the U. S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has supported Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) network to provide access to researchers from around the world to world-class experimental facilities and computational resources. NHERI user-scientists become part of a community that values interdisciplinary collaboration, open sharing of data and methods, inclusive and equitable research, mentorship of early career researchers, and development of the next generation of hazards experts. This cultural shift towards convergent, multi-hazard research that NHERI has helped catalyze has created a strong and engaged community of researchers that are well-positioned to generate effective solutions that contribute to providing a safe and secure civil infrastructure and communities by helping prevent natural hazards from becoming national disasters. In this session, the audience will be informed about NHERI’s capabilities to support research and collaboration in looking for solutions to improve the resilience and sustainability of civil infrastructure and enhance the safety and security of communities in support of the UN SDGs and Agenda 2030. Information will be provided on how the community can participate and leverage national and international partnerships to extend the reach of their research and the impact of its outcomes.
