The politics of climate – how will the green transition play out in the age of geopolitics?

Globalization is being replaced by geopolitics and protectionism, driven by ongoing crises, wars, and energy conflicts. Nations are increasingly adopting protectionist policies, making geopolitical risks and security top priorities. Europe faces a competitiveness crisis, the US is heading towards a contentious election, and concerns about China’s economy persist. The green transition is now central to global competition, known as green geopolitics. This session will explore the implications for the green transition amid industrial rivalry, energy transition, and investment attraction, highlighting opportunities for companies to lead and thrive in building a sustainable future.

Key questions to be addressed will include the following:

  • Winning the green transition has become a central part of the great power competition. But what does it mean in practice?
  • The West vs. the Rest – how is the age of geopolitics and protectionism impacting the energy transition?
  • Is there hope for international institutions in climate issues amidst geopolitical tensions?
  • Are there compromises to be made on the path to a cleaner future? What kind of role should companies play in it?

This session is hosted by Outokumpu.
