UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance 2024
The UN General Assembly will convene a High-Level Meeting on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) for the second time during its 79th session in New York in September 2024. Drug-resistant infections know no borders, meaning no single country can respond to AMR alone. This meeting is an important opportunity for world leaders to collectively address the looming threat AMR poses to global health, food security, and achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Without decisive action, such as that outlined in the political declaration for the meeting, AMR will cause even more global suffering, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The intergovernmental negotiations for the declaration were co-facilitated by Malta and Barbados.
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will speak during the opening segment, to be held from 10.00 to 10.45 EDT on 26 September and livestreamed on UN WebTV.
