United Against Hunger: Realigning Global Action for Food Crises in Times of Disruption

Germany, the Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC) and the World Food Programme (WFP) will convene a high-level ministerial side event on the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

This restricted event will bring together key stakeholders to consider how the international community can collectively address the worsening global food security crisis. Dramatic funding reductions, conflict—including disruptions to critical trade routes such as the Strait of Hormuz—and climate extremes, including the ongoing and projected impacts of El Niño, are increasingly converging to deepen food crises and expose the limitations of current response systems.

Informed by the September 2026 Update of the Global Report on Food Crises, the event aims to elevate the issue on the international agenda and generate momentum for the system-wide transformations and reform initiatives needed to strengthen coherence, accountability and effective delivery in the face of today’s considerable challenges.

The event will be moderated by Dr Helder da Costa, Secretary-General of the g7+, and will open with remarks by Ms Reem Alabali Radovan, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany, and Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of the Belgians. The programme will also include a brief scene-setting segment, a high-level roundtable discussion, interventions from the floor and closing remarks.
