Using Art to Support Climate Activism
Three artists — a Queens-based cultural worker, a film director and writer, and a photographer — will discuss ways that art can be used to support climate activism. They will also share ways in which they have been able to use the tools of Sustaining All Life (SAL) to support and sustain themselves and to powerfully communicate the critical need to stop the senseless destruction of our planet. Panelists will share their experiences and lead an audience discussion of this topic.
Specifically,
– Cecilia Lim is a Queens-based cultural worker who connects deeply with the people whose stories she tells. In 2019, she launched the Remember Y(our) Connection / Tandaan Ang Ating Ugnayan project that uplifts the wisdom of frontline communities and illuminates pathways to work together for the well-being of our ecosystems through dialogue and story-sharing, drawing, short documentary film, and street installations.
– Cecilia will share about Mushroom Power!, a public participatory creative thought exercise inspired by fungi’s ability to transform human-made toxins. It is part of the 2024 Street Work Earth program in Jackson Heights, Queens, scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 22.
– Ela Thier is a writer-director of fiction films, who uses comedy to help audiences unnumb and feel hope. She’s currently in production on her third feature film, while developing a comedy sci-fi series focused on the climate. She attributes her achievements as a filmmaker to her use of the tools of Sustaining All Life and will share how she uses those tools to sustain herself as an artist, and create films that empower and unify audiences.
– Stan Eichner has been the photographer for Sustaining All Life at the last three in-person New York Climate Weeks. He will show ten of his photos to illustrate how his photography of climate activists, landscapes and wildlife to communicate the urgent message that our earth and all life on it must be fiercely protected.
