RefugePoint and the Women’s Refugee Commission in cooperation with the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative are organizing Better Lives Now: Leveraging Refugees’ Talents, a side event to the UN General Assembly, to launch the Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative. The event is also produced in partnership with Club de Madrid, MercyCorps, The B Team and Refugees Deeply.
The Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative is a collaboration among NGOs, UNHCR, foundations, government agencies, the private sector and others that aims to support refugees to achieve a better quality of life and regain agency over their finances and futures, while at the same time supporting the peace, stability and prosperity goals of the hosting countries.
Better Lives Now refers to the belief that refugees should not have to wait years or decades for formal solutions to live the dignified lives they desire. This event will build on and respond to the Global Compact on Refugees, which will be considered for adoption by member states during the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly.
Speakers include Kim Campbell, former Prime Minister of Canada, Per Heggenes, CEO of the IKEA Foundation, Robert Hakiza, Co-Founder of Young African Refugees for Integral Development, Vartan Gregorian, President of the Carnegie Corporation and Noubar Afeyan, Senior Managing Partner and CEO of Flagship Pioneering. The discussion will be moderated by Heba Aly, Director of IRIN News.
This event is at capacity. Please visit www.refugeeselfreliance.org for a link to the livestream.
