Mental health disorders impose a significant and under-recognized burden on the global healthcare system, affecting social needs, basic human rights, and the economy. Global spending on mental health care is almost $½ trillion annually, yet the epidemic is worsening. Digital innovation in mental health provides an opportunity to create breakthrough solutions that improve mental health and well-being outcomes on a greater scale than ever before – highlighting the importance we ensure these tools are safe, clinically validated and trusted.

This “disruptive technology” – such as artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), digital reality (DR), blockchain, and the cloud – is ushering in a new era of potential productivity and operations for clinicians, health organizations, and consumers; offering a tremendous opportunity for improving global mental health systems by making them more affordable and easily scaled. However, we need to ensure that digital mental health and disruptive technology can be accepted as reliable, valid, and safe by consumers, promoted by clinicians, and trusted by governments and healthcare system owners so that they can be supported and strategically integrated.

As such this panel is intended to have the following outcomes:
– Generate awareness of disruptive technology in mental health and how it fits in the landscape of digital health innovation on a global scale
– Greater attention to the barriers and benefits of disruptive technology integration
– Consideration of the ethical implementation of disruptive technology and how we can ensure these tools are trusted with global standards

We imagine a world where everyone can access services that support them in attaining their desired emotional, social, and psychological potential – and a world where we empower our clinicians and health systems to deliver this by putting the correct tools within reach.
