Join The Moth and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for a night of personal stories from survivors and those on the frontlines of the fight to end polio. Hosted by Dr. Richard Besser, President and CEO, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. This evening will feature three storytellers – all graduates of The Moth’s Global Program—sharing personal narratives of unexpected lessons learned, and the power of speaking up and speaking out. This special event will include remarks by EXILE TETSUYA and Chris Elias, President of Global Development Division at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Polio Oversight Board Chair.

Hosted by: Dr. Richard Besser, President and CEO, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation’s largest health philanthropy, a position he assumed in April 2017 after a long career at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Under his leadership, RWJF aims to create a fair and equitable Culture of Health for all, addressing health barriers caused by racism and various forms of discrimination.

Storytellers Include:

Safia Ibrahim, Public Engagement Manager at Results Canada. After contracting polio as a toddler in Somalia, Safia uses her voice to engage decision makers in Canada to support childhood immunization worldwide. Safia lives in Ottawa, Canada with her family.

Wasif Mahmood, who is passionate about helping children receive their rights. He leads the communication unit in Pakistan, which is responsible for partnerships, advocacy, strategic and crisis communications.

Oyewale Tomori, a past President of the Nigerian Academy of Science. He was also the virologist for the World Health Organization’s Africa Region. He has served and continues to serve on numerous national and global health advisory committees.
